I'm never gonna allow location tracking all of the time so your app is useless to me. I'll make sure I tell my friends. Damn data spies.
Hey John, totally fair reaction. I also don’t like asking for this permission, and I understand why it looks bad. The reason is Bluetooth, not location tracking. On Android, especially older versions, Google bundled Bluetooth device scanning under location permissions because nearby Bluetooth devices can theoretically be used to infer location. So even though our app needs it to connect to Soundbrenner wearables, Android shows it as location access. We don’t use your GPS location, we don’t track where you are, and we don’t sell location data. We just need the permission so the app can reliably find and connect to the device. That said, you’re right that this should be better. Newer Android versions support a cleaner Bluetooth permission model, and we need to rebuild parts of our Bluetooth implementation to move to that. It’s on our list because I agree the current permission request creates the wrong impression. On iOS this is not the same issue. And if you don’t use a Soundbrenner wearable, the metronome app itself should still be usable without always-on location.
