When I tune my drum, a Mridangam, while it has some sustain, the sound is short compared to a string. I see the note but it dissapear too early. The software should recognize that a note is played with the volume increase and display its tune for a longer time than the note itself. Some phone tuner application work fine with short notes, it should be possible for you too.
