At a Pat Metheny concert I noticed that his drummer and keyboard player did not have headphones or earbuds but were able to stay in perfect sync with Metheny's MIDI driven Orchestrion running off of a laptop at the mixing station. The musicians were not wearing a Soundbrenner Pulse. However, they both wore a flexible, 3.5" wide cloth "strap" that draped down on both sides of their neck and both sides terminated on their chest. At both ends of this "strap" there was a 3.5" black area that was slightly thicker than the strap and contained (what I assumed to be) haptic transducers that provided the same metronome function that the Soundbrenner Pulse provides. There was a wire that was attached to these straps... not sure if it was power, timing signals, or both. I would imagine a battery could be easily embedded in the strap. Following this idea, I modified the strap on my Pulse so that I could wrap it around my core with the Pulse resting on my sternum. Having the ability to feel the pulse in your core, as opposed to your wrist, makes the timekeeping process more transparent, easier to follow and less distracting to the multitasking going on during a live performance. Has Soundbrenner considered building a Pulse that is similar to what Metheny's group used? Conversely, a first step could be to provide a simple strap that has elastic cloth and could wrap around one's torso such that the Pulse could be used in a similar manner how I have modified my unit. Medical flexible ankle wraps is what I used, cut to length and use Velcro to connect both ends together. I put my head and left arm through the elastic loop so that the strap crosses diagonally across my chest... I adjust for placement of the Pulse to rest on my sternum. Wear a shirt over the Pulse and strap... It works really well. Doesn't interfere with my guitar strap... locks in with Ableton Live. Our drummer and keyboard player have the same setup. People ask how we are able to run sync'd graphics and mood lighting without any apparent means of doing so.
